Easter eggs
I started making Easter eggs a few years ago during the second spring of the pandemic. I had a baby at the time and they were great for hiding indoors to practice for egg hunting outside. They’re also great for Easter decor!
That first year I made them, I searched online and looked at every crocheted Easter egg pattern I could find and ended up making something freestyle based on what I had seen and the size I wanted them to be. Of course, I forgot to write down what I had done, so the next year and I had to figure it out all over again. And again the next year.
Last year, I did finally write down the pattern. But, when I dug it out this year I decided I wanted to change it. I scaled the eggs down slightly and shaped them to be a bit more narrow on one and end broad at the other end. They’re still slightly bigger than real eggs, but not comically so.
Now, in the interest of being able to remember next year what I did this year, I’m sharing my 2025 pattern here.
HOOK
I used my favorite Tulip Etimo size 4.0mm crochet hook but you can play around and see what combo you like - smaller hooks will produce smaller eggs and bigger hooks will make bigger eggs, although I don’t recommend going too big or the stitches will become too loose.
YARN
I use worsted weight acrylic crafting yarn, mostly Red Heart Super Saver and Big Twist. But any worsted weight yarn should do. You could also scale the eggs up with chunky yarn or blanket yarn and a bigger hook.
OTHER TOOLS
You’ll also need scissors or snips and yarn needle.
OTHER SUPPLIES
You’ll also need some kind of stuffing. I use plain old Poly-fil, it (or something similar) seems to be available at most craft stores.
STITCHES & SKILLS REQUIRED (US terms)
Magic ring
Ch: Chain stitch
INC: Increase (two stitches in one space)
DEC: Decrease - I strongly recommend doing invisible decreases (in the front loops only)
This pattern is worked in a continuous spiral - you will not need to join and chain at the end of each round (although you can if you want, it will leave a visible seam).
PATTERN
In a magic ring, 6 sc (6)
Inc in each stitch around (12)
Sc around (12)
Sc, inc around (18)
Sc around (18)
Sc around (18)
Sc, sc, inc around (24)
Sc around (24) until you have 14 rows
Sc, sc, dec around (18)
Start stuffing
Sc, dec around (12)
Fasten off with a long tail.
Finish stuffing
Weave the tail through FLO of the last row and carefully pull it tight and fasten/knot it to the last row.
TA-DA! You’re done. You can add embroider and other embellishment if you want (and perhaps I’ll add another post about that), but I love a basket full of solid, brightly-colored eggs! Happy Easter!
